Keeping Michigan

S. A. F. E.

Donni sponsored 15 bills since being elected as state representative. See the full breakdown on how she is actively implementing her policy plan as your S.A.F.E. choice.

Security and Public Safety

  • Law enforcement is essential in emergencies, being the first to respond and the last to leave the scene.

We rely on local, state, and federal law enforcement daily. Making sure they are properly funded and supported is crucial to maintaining a safe community.

  • Everyone should feel safe in their community, which is why I sponsored HB4093. This legislation requires individuals convicted of serious felonies to serve at least 85% of their prison sentences, reinforcing public safety and accountability in the criminal justice system.

  • I proposed a bill to update sentencing guidelines for firearms-related offenses to ensure stricter penalties and enhance public safety by imposing more rigorous consequences for dangerous criminal behavior. (HB 5152)

  • Ensuring top-notch care for veterans and senior citizens is a fundamental responsibility of our government. However, America's track record in veteran care is lacking, and Michigan must lead the charge in improving it. Our leaders must prioritize veteran care, benefits, and services without fail.

Senior citizens, too, deserve better treatment. Unfairly taxing their pensions, which are already subject to taxation during their working years, adds unnecessary financial strain.

  • To increase state security, I sponsored HB4041, which prohibits the use of TikTok on state devices due to data privacy concerns.

Accountability & Transparency

  • Legislators should be held accountable to their constituency and the people of Michigan, especially when handling taxpayer money.

HB4751 would fortify legislative transparency by requiring lawmakers to adhere to stricter transparency guidelines during the appropriation bill process.

  • As an elected official, I know firsthand the great responsibility I have to the people of Michigan. Establishing clear rules for appropriations would ensure that legislators adhere to strict guidelines for responsible governance. That is why I sponsored HB 5296, which would improve legislative transparency and accountability.

  • I introduced HB5427, which refines the efficiency and transparency of Michigan's legislative processes by establishing new guidelines for managing legislative records and documents.

  • The same rules should apply across the state, ensuring that all citizens are treated equitably and justly. When laws and regulations are applied consistently and transparently, they foster trust in public institutions and promote a sense of community.

Fairness in governance not only protects individual rights but also encourages civic engagement and accountability, ultimately contributing to the stability and prosperity of society as a whole.

Fiscal Responsibility

  • I introduced a bill that would repeal the State Real Estate Transfer Tax Act of 1993, aiming to reduce financial burdens on property transactions and make homeownership more affordable in Michigan. (HB5811)

  • Michigan's population decline, particularly among young adults leaving for other states, is a concerning trend.

To stem this tide, we must prioritize job retention, expand opportunities, attracting talent, and provide stability for our workforce. A robust workforce not only benefits individuals but also fuels economic growth. Addressing inflation, reevaluating our energy policies to reduce dependence on foreign resources, and prioritizing the American economy are essential steps in this direction. It's time to put Michigan's economic well-being first.

  • I introduced legislation that would exempt downtown development authorities from real estate transfer taxes, thereby encouraging investment and revitalization in downtown areas. (HB5813) This investment would promote economic growth in our communities.

  • My House Bill 5812 would strengthen  the tax settlement process in Michigan by updating administrative procedures to reflect the repeal of the State Real Estate Transfer Tax Act, thereby simplifying tax administration and promoting efficiency and transparency for taxpayers.

  • Small businesses flourish when they operate freely, with less government oversight.

It's evident that fostering competitive competition and minimizing overreach is vital for their success. By allowing small businesses to thrive in such an environment, Michigan can attract and retain the talent necessary to reclaim its position as a leading economic state.

  • During the budget season in both 2023 and 2024, I proposed to spend general funding on local roads, rather than pet projects.

Investing in our infrastructure is crucial for economic growth and improving community well-being. Properly allocated resources can ensure the roads are maintained without increasing cost to the taxpayer.

These improvements not only create jobs in the short term but also lay the groundwork for sustained development, attracting businesses and improving the quality of life for residents.

Education

  • Keeping schools accountable ensures our students' need are met while giving parents peace of mind about their child's education. In-depth evaluation of schools and teachers holds them responsible for their performance and quality of education.

By holding schools accountable for transparency guidelines, we ensure resources are used wisely and parents feel safe and comfortable in the education their child is getting.

  • I co-sponsored HB4090, which increases guidelines for safety and security measures in our schools. By expanding the training required for staff, we can make sure every teacher responsible for our children has the proper training for a crisis situation.

  • I sponsored legislation for the "OK2SAY program", which increases the state's student safety program.

This movement allows students to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools.

  • Educational freedom is vital in today's job market. While traditional college has been a success pathway, numerous alternatives like vocational training, apprenticeships, and certificate programs allow individuals to pursue careers that match their interests and skills without the financial strain of a four-year degree.

I fully support giving students the agency to choose paths that fit their career goals and personal circumstances.
